Ecstasy to treat PTSD: FDA approves final testing

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Could the illegal party drug Ecstasy help veterans with post traumatic stress disorder?

Small-scale trials of ecstasy as a potential treatment for PTSD have been underway since 2013. Approval by the FDA to green light a phase three clinical trial would mark the last hurdle before it can be submitted for approval as a prescription drug.

Researchers are so optimistic about ecstasy as a treatment for PTSD, they have applied for so-called "breakthrough therapy status" with the FDA to speed the approval process.

If all goes with the phase three trial, the drug could be available by 2021.

CBS News 8's Richard Allyn reports from the V.A. Hospital in La Jolla with a look at how this unconventional treatment may offer vets new hope.
