Limos and bikes escort kids in need to holiday party

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Nearly 100 homeless children with Father Joe's Villages experienced the glitz and glam of a holiday party Thursday night.

For some it was their first party, and described it as the most fun they have ever had.

The San Diego chapter of Harley Owners Group teamed with Father Joe's Villages to plan the event.

Many of the children, ages 5 to 17, beamed, glowed and grinned as they sat on Santa's lap to receive a toy and a special message from Old Saint Nick.

Thursday night's event gave the children a sense of normalcy. Father Joe's reports there are more than 550 homeless families in San Diego.

Father Joe's provides services for the homeless year-round.

According to organization, a $27 donation can provide child therapy and a $86 donation can provide one week of housing for a veteran.

Homeless children are four times more likely to have development delays and are twice as likely to repeat a grade.
