Inmates Turned Santas: Kids receive free bikes from unlikely source

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - 'Tis the season for giving, and this year local kids in need received gifts from inmates at a South Bay prison.

Inmates saved up enough money to buy 200 new bicycles for underprivileged children.

Ken Kirby and his fellow inmates at Donovan decided to use the money from their work to buy children bikes instead of using the money for their own benefit behind bars.

"It's an opportunity for them to give back to the community - their local San Diego Community. Some of them have done less fortunate things - it's a way of atonement and giving back," said Robert Brown, Donovan's Correctional Facility Manager.

The program is now in its third year and the children are chosen based on need and hard work in school.

"It's all about joy. It's Christmas time. They say naughty or nice, but every kid deserves something," said Kirby.

For Kirby, Friday's event is a reminder of how much one misses when bad choices are made. It reminded him of his kids and how much he misses them, but he plans to ride on the right path once he gets out next year.

Inmates at Donovan can earn money by working in one of several industries including a bakery, a show factory and laundry facility.
