Two accused of taking officer on a wild ride face judge

An arraignment was held Friday for the two suspects accused of stealing an off duty federal officer's bicycle.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two suspects accused of stealing an off duty federal officer's bicycle faced a judge Friday.

The off duty officer spotted the two individuals taking his bike and jumped in the back of the truck as they took off. He ended up being taken on a wild ride from Ocean Beach to downtown before the driver crashed.

The officer grabbed his badge, ran out to the blue Chevrolet truck and shouted to the two occupants, "Stop -- police!''

During the roughly seven-mile trek to downtown San Diego, the victim called the police from his cellphone, providing his location and direction of travel.

Reaching the area of Fourth Avenue and K Street, the truck veered off the roadway and struck a large concrete planter box. It then rolled backward and crashed to a halt against a parked car, Martinez said.

The suspects were identified as 23-year-olds Adan Bustos and Arisdelsi Yoana-Sanchez.

After the crash, the men jumped out and ran off. Officers chased down Sanchez and took her into custody nearby.

Bustos, meanwhile, got into a taxi and was driven away from the area, but police pulled over the cab a short time later in the 600 block of Harbor Drive and arrested him.

Sanchez told investigators Bustos was her boyfriend and she was homeless. She said she had witnessed several thefts but was not an accomplice. She could face a misdemeanor charge.

Bustos faces charges including robbery, kidnapping and hit and run.

Both suspects are due back in court on December 14th when a trial date will be set.
