Teen family member arrested in connection to woman shot in La Mesa home

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 17-year-old girl was in custody in juvenile hall Wednesday on suspicion of shooting a family member in the victim's East County home, leaving the woman hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.

Detectives and deputy U.S. marshals arrested the teen alongside 50th Street in San Diego shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, about 10 hours after 59-year-old Susan Pierce of La Mesa reported being shot at her house in the 5000 block of Keeney Street, according to police.

Authorities withheld the suspect's name because she is a minor.

Officers responding to the woman's 911 call arrived to find her lying in her front doorway, suffering from a gunshot wound to her back, LMPD Capt. Matt Nicholass said. Medics took her to a trauma center, where she remained Wednesday morning in stable condition.

A white 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck registered to the victim or another resident of her home was missing following the shooting but was recovered later in the day, the captain said.

Nicholass declined to specify the girl's relationship to the victim. He also would not say if the two lived together or disclose what might have prompted the gunfire.

The teenager is expected to face a charge of attempted murder, Nicholass said.
