I-15 onramp reopens after crane topples near SR-56

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Rancho Penasquitos-area freeway onramp reopened Thursday following the removal of a large crane that toppled onto its side and a cleanup of the hydraulic fluid that it subsequently spilled.

The noninjury accident on the connector from eastbound state Route 56 to southbound Interstate 15 occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and caused a miles-long backup during rush-hour traffic, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The overturned crane prompted authorities to close the freeway connector ramps from both eastbound and westbound state Route 56. Caltans dismantled the crane and put it on three flatbed trucks around 5:30 a.m.

The transition from westbound SR-56 was reopened by around 4:20 a.m. and the eastbound SR-56 connector was cleared by about 7:45 a.m., according to Caltrans.
