SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A man was found dead early Monday in Balboa Park.

The San Diego Police Communications Center received a call at approximately 2:00 a.m. Monday, which reported finding a body that had suffered major head trauma.

"San Diego Police received a phone call from a citizen who discovered the body of a male, a white male,” said Lt. Mike Holden with the San Diego Police Homicide Unit.

The body of a 67-year-old, white male was found in the grassy area along the 3,000 block of Park Boulevard across the street from the San Diego Zoo between Morley Field Drive and Zoo Place. The discovery prompted the closure of Park Boulevard’s northbound lanes.

"The officers actually pronounced the man dead at the scene,” continued Holden.

Detectives gathered evidence in the area and spoke to possible witnesses walking in Florida Canyon, which is at the edge of the scene. Police also reported there was a small homeless encampment set up in the grassy area Sunday. Officers said they have no solid leads on this suspicious death and haven’t made any arrests.

The man's body was removed from the scene late Monday morning by the medical examiner. The victim has been identified, but his identity will not be released pending family notifications.

Anyone with information in this case, is asked to call the San Diego Police Department.
