SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A motorist believed to have struck two men attempting to cross a street in the Midway area before fleeing was arrested early Monday after a brief chase that ended in a crash, police said.

Police say two men were in a crosswalk on Rosecrans Street when they were struck by the vehicle.

A 28-year-old man was left in the roadway with serious injuries after getting dragged an estimated 400 feet. A 25-year-old man also suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized as a precaution.

Witness Francisco Vicincio said he could only watch as the a car hit the two men around 10:15 p.m. Sunday night

"You could hear the screeching of the car [as] he got hit and then after he got hit," Vicincio said.

He described watching as the man was dragged. The driver then stopped, but as onlookers approached his car, he sped away from the scene.

Rosecrans was shut down for six hours during the investigation.

Around 1 a.m., an officer on patrol less than a mile away spotted a suspicious car driving without headlights.

"That officer did some really good police work," said Sgt. Ron Glass. "[He] had developed some leads that brought him into this area and he did spot the car.

Police say the driver again tried to get away.

He crashed into a parked blue sedan before turning into an alley and crashing into a telephone pole.

The driver was taken into custody, police said and his name was not immediately disclosed.
