Local World War II hero honored with Bronze Star

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local World War II hero received the recognition he deserved on Tuesday after Congressman Scott Peters presented him a Bronze Star Medal.

Army veteran Jack Thorpe received the Bronze Star Medal 70-years after having served his country.

Thorpe served under General George Patton's Third Army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, took part in the siege of Bastogne and was one of the first to liberate a concentration camp.

Thorpe served from 1944 to 1946. His daughter thought her 91-year-old father was deserving of the Bronze Medal so she reached out to Congressman Scott Peters.

Peters reached out to the National Personnel Records Center and the Department of Army who awarded Thorpe the Bronze Star.

Jack Thorpe is a life-long San Diego resident, who met his wife before he enlisted and has been married for 69-years. Together they have children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Congressman Peters encouraged San Diego veterans who are struggling to get the recognition they have earned through their service to reach out to his office.
