Eager K9 takes a bite out of officer instead of suspect

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) — It all began when a woman's car was stolen.

The woman went into a 7-Eleven at Euclid Avenue and Division Street in National City and left her car running, when she came out, the car was gone.

Police were called and while officers were on scene, the alleged thief drove back to the scene of the crime and officers stopped him.

The suspect - who is described as an underage male - refused to get out of the car for at least 30 minutes.

During that time, National City Police Officers used pepper spray and shot bean bags at the car - also calling for a police canine from the San Diego Police Department.

According to a witness, while the officers were trying to use the dog to get the suspect out of the car, the K9 bit one of them on the leg.

The officer did not appear to be badly injured and police took the suspect into custody. The car that was stolen is in bad shape – it was towed because it was not safe to drive.
