Mentors needed for more than 70 foster youth

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — If you've always wanted to help foster children, but aren't in a position to adopt, mentoring could be the perfect way to make a difference in a child's life.

In the newest Adopt 8 we meet one of dozens of foster youth currently on a waiting list to be matched with a mentor.

Kiara's skills on the volleyball court prepared her well for our game of smashball at the park..

This easy-going 11-year-old says she enjoys living with her aunt and uncle, but is hoping to find a mentor, to do more outdoor activities together.

"Play volleyball, take hikes and walk around parks," she said.

Kiara would like to share time with someone who's a bit closer in age, especially since she has no siblings.

"I would like a mentor to be like a big sister," said Kiara.

Kiara is one of more than 70 foster youth here in San Diego County, hoping to be matched with a mentor. She's had one before, and enjoyed the experience.

"You get to spend time with each other and get to know them better," she said when asked why she enjoyed having a mentor.

And she has this to say to the next volunteer:

"Thank you, for taking away your time to spend time with me."

Kiara, who's heading into seventh grade, says she does have great role models at school.

"There's actually a bunch of nice teachers there," she said.

And she is grateful for her educators.

"They give extra support in classes," said Kiara.

But what Kiara would love for her time outside of school, is a mentor.. And while she waits this sweet, soft spoken girl, with an infectious giggle is staying positive - just like the emojis her shirt.

"It says 'smile' on the back," she said. "Because I like to smile."
