San Diego's little tricksters hit the streets for Halloween

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — Ghouls and goblins were out in full force on Tuesday across the San Diego area looking for treats and maybe pulling a few tricks along the way.

While News 8's Eric Kahnert was in Carmel Mountain Ranch with a look at the fun, and some helpful tips for a safe Halloween, News 8's Abbie Alford was in Coronado.

The City of Coronado was ranked among the "top ten" neighborhoods for trick-or-treating in the country.

The Bernard's moved to Margarita Avenue five years ago, and learned Halloween was a big deal on their street. For four years, the family has been transforming their home into a haunted house.

The real estate firm Home Union ranked Coronado Beach South Island 9th in country for best neighborhood to trick-or-treat in.

To create the list the company looked at median home prices, neighborhood density, safety and added some spooky by factoring the nearest cemetery.

The Bernards take two weeks to transform their home into a haunted house.

"Now the whole community comes and people come form all over San Diego because it's a great safe area where you can trick-or-treat for hours," said Lori Bernard.

In North County, thousands of little ghosts and goblins were out trick-or-treating in downtown Encinitas.

The Encinitas 101 Main Street Association hosted its 16th Annual Safe Trick-or-Treat event. Dozens of businesses along highway 101 handed out goodies and more than 100 intricately-carved pumpkins were on display.

There were also activities and games for kids.

Oakland's Rockridge neighborhood is ranked number one for trick-or-treating. Other California cities that ranked are Mill Valley in San Francisco, Palo Alto and Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles.
