The box-office reign ofCrazy Rich Asians had to end at some point, and after three weeks as the top movie in the United States, the romantic comedy was finally bumped down to second place by the premiere of horror spinoffThe Nun.

The $53.5 million debut forThe Nun in US theaters and $131 million worldwide outperformed pundits’ predictions for the film by a wide margin, and gave the film the biggest opening weekend of any movie in The Conjuring franchise. The previous record-holder in the five-film series — which also includesThe Conjuring,The Conjuring 2,Annabelle, andAnnabelle: Creation — was 2013’s franchise-launcherThe Conjuring, which had a $41.8 million premiere.

Despite the film’s big box-office debut, neither professional critics nor general audiences were all that enamored withThe Nun, which only managed to earn 28 percent positive reviews from critics and a C grade from ticket-buying audiences. That typically means that a film’s initial success won’t last all that long, but anything’s possible with horror movies — particularly as the Halloween season creeps ever closer.

The only other new release to crack the weekend’s top 10 films wasPeppermint, a revenge thriller starring Jennifer Garner that performed just about as well as analysts predicted in the lead-up to the film’s release. Although critics really disliked it — to the tune of 14 percent positive reviews — audiences were a little kinder to the movie, and gave it a decent B+ grade overall.

After a few months of relatively minor shifts in the box-office landscape, this upcoming week brings a few major releases into the mix that should shake things up a bit.

First and foremost among the movies premiering this upcoming week is The Predator, director Shane Black’s reboot of the sci-fi horror Predator franchise, which hasn’t had a new installment since 2010’sPredators. The film features an impressive cast that includes Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, and Thomas Jane, and brings the monstrous trophy-hunting aliens back to Earth for another bloody adventure.

Also arriving in theaters on a wave of Academy Award buzz is the dramaWhite Boy Rick, starringRichie Merritt and Matthew McConaughey, which tells the real-life story of a teenager who became the FBI’s youngest undercover informant in the ’80s, but found himself imprisoned years later on a life sentence for drug trafficking.
