Animated features are having a big summer at the box office, withHotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation taking the top spot over the weekend and joiningIncredibles 2 among the top five films in theaters. That doesn’t come as much of a surprise, given that animated franchises traditionally bring families into air-conditioned theaters during the heat of summer.

What has beena bit unexpected, though, are some of the films that haven’t been able to fill theaters.

Dwayne Johnson’s latest action-adventure film,Skyscraper, debuted in third place over the weekend and fell short of the $30 million premiere that box-office pundits and the studio anticipated. The film, which casts Johnson as a security expert attempting to rescue his family from the upper reaches of the world’s tallest skyscraper, received a lukewarm response from audiences (and a “B+” grade on CinemaScore), and left professional critics divided with a 50-percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Waspsuffered a big drop in its second week, and joined Guardians of the Galaxy, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Captain America: The First Avenger as the only movies in Marvel’s cinematic universe to lose the top spot at the box office the week after their premiere. The sequel to 2015’s Ant-Manis proving to be one of Marvel’s smallest movies in more than a few ways, as it’s on pace to finish among the lowest-grossing films in the MCU both domestically and worldwide.

At its current rate of ticket sales,Ant-Man and the Wasp stands a chance — albeit a slim one — of passing the $180.2 million its predecessor earned in U.S. theaters, but it’s probably not going to equal the $519.3 million thatAnt-Man earned worldwide. Of the 20 films released in the MCU so far, the originalAnt-Man is currently the 17th highest-grossing film domestically and the 16th highest-grossing film worldwide.

In other noteworthy news, Incredibles 2continued its wild run in theaters by adding another $16.2 million domestically over the weekend, extending its lead as the highest-grossing animated feature of all time in U.S. theaters (althoughFrozen still holds that record worldwide). The film also just passedThe Dark Knight on the list of the all-time, highest-grossing movies domestically, moving into ninth place on that list.

This upcoming weekend brings a few lower-profile films to the theater that are all sequels, and could each attract a respectable audience, but aren’t likely to challenge the major players at the box office right now. Among them is Denzel Washington’s first-ever sequel,The Equalizer 2, as well as the musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and the horror sequelUnfriended: Dark Web.
