If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.

‘Happy!’ season 1

best new shows and movies to stream happy season 1

Comics writer Grant Morrison is known for penning some truly bizarre stories, and it’s hard to imagine something like Happy! surviving the transition to live action. Somehow, it worked. The show follows Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni), a drug-addled, disgraced ex-cop who makes a living as a hit man. After a near-death experience, Nick is able to see Happy (Patton Oswalt), a cartoon unicorn who claims to be the imaginary friend of a missing girl named Hailey (Bryce Lorenzo). Happy implores Sax to help him find Hailey, who has been abducted by a villain called Very Bad Santa (Joseph D. Reitman). To rescue Hailey, Sax is going to have to bludgeon and chop his way through the criminal underworld as Happy looks on in horror and awe. Happy! is a wild ride, a live-action cartoon that revels in bloodshed, and Meloni is in top form as the deranged detective.

‘Adventure Time’ season 10

best new shows and movies to stream adventure time season 10

For nearly a decade, Adventure Time was one of the most creative animated series on television, a colorful, delirious story following the adventures of young hero Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his shape-shifting dog, Jake (John DiMaggio). Living in the distant future, in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, Finn and Jake battle strange creatures, explore surreal lands, and hang out with the oddballs who inhabit Ooo, including charming ruler/mad scientist Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch) and punk-rock vampire Marceline (Olivia Olson). All good things must come to an end, even in Ooo, and season 10 brings the show’s vast mythology and great cast of characters to a fitting finale. For those who haven’t watch Adventure Time, 10 seasons may seem like a daunting backlog but the show’s gorgeous animation, unique characters, and dark humor are worth the investment.

‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’

best new shows and movies to stream mowgli

Although Disney put out a live-action version of The Jungle Book a mere two years ago, 2018 brings another adaptation, this time from director/CGI proselytizer Andy Serkis. Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (which, it should be noted, actually began development before Disney’s 2016 film) hews closer to Rudyard Kipling’s stories, and although it doesn’t get quite as dark as Kipling’s tales, there are some parts kids might watch through their fingers. The story follows Mowgli (Rohan Chand), a human boy raised by wolves in the jungle. Mowgli learns the laws of the jungle from the wolves, as well as the bear Baloo (Serkis) and black panther Bagheera (Christian Bale), but the vision of a human village draws Mowgli’s eye. Mowgli’s visual design is strikingly different than Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book; where Favreau approached photorealism, Serkis’ creatures have oddly human faces, giving the film a surreal look. The cast is superb, elevating an occasionally bumpy plot.

‘Neo Yokio: Pink Christmas’

best new shows and movies to stream neo yokio pink christmas

Ezra Koenig’s Neo Yokio was one of the weirdest projects to surface on Netflix, a six-episode anime steeped in anti-consumerist satire and absurdism. Set in a version of New York where demons periodically attack and powerful magicians make a fortune banishing them, Neo Yokio tells the story of Kaz Khan (Jaden Smith), a vapid, upper-crust Magician who, aided by his robot butler, Charles (Jude Law), hunts demons at the behest of his aunt, Agatha (Susan Sarandon). When not on the job, Kaz must contend with rival socialite Arcangelo (Jason Schwartzman) as he tries to find love in a city that only loves wealth. Now the show gets a new, stranger chapter with the holiday special Neo Yokio: Pink Christmas, in which a slightly more self-reflective Kaz must defend the city against a demonic attack while potentially learning the true meaning of Christmas.

best new shows and movies to stream marvelous mrs maisel season 2

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s award-conquering comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel returns with a new season full of laughs and social insights. Set in the 1950s, the show follows Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a Jewish housewife who, after her husband leaves her for another woman, pursues a career in stand-up comedy, mining her personal disappointments for laughs. Season 2 finds Midge still building up her reputation as a comedian, as well as juggling the various dramas associated with her parents, ex-husband, and others. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a witty show, but it also has a lot of somber moments, exploring as it does the difficulties of being a woman in world dominated by men.
