ENCINITAS (NEWS 8) – Controversy swirled up again in Encinitas over a staircase project proposed for Beacon’s Beach. The city has long been looking to replace the iconic Switchback Trail leading to Beacon’s Beach with a concrete staircase but many residents are not embracing the idea.
On Monday, staff and engineers were supposed to work with the public on design ideas; however, many in the crowd said they did not want a staircase at all.
Some residents even expressed a growing sense of concern that their voices are not being heard. Many were critical of the plan – especially after the original design was rejected by the city’s planning commission back in July.
The City of Encinitas said the bluff at the beach is in dire condition because of landslide movements and erosion. Officials believe that could eventually put people and access to the beach below in danger.
Currently, the Switchback trail is how beachgoers get to the water. Many consider it a landmark they want the city to preserve. At previous meetings, the city stated that is not a viable option. The Coastal Preservation Group, the Surfrider Foundation have backed the stair case project.
Encinitas resident Michael Collier believes it is better than waiting for something to happen. “I would favor stairs as an alternative to nothing. I don’t see the trail maintenance as a good long-term resolution.”
Opposition to the plan has been picking up steam – leading some to feel like their voices are not being heard no matter how much they cross off the plan.
The next meeting in the saga is scheduled in October. The city plans for a design to go before the Coastal Commission. If the project is approved, construction would begin next November.
