SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — After crashing a car into a tree in the South Bay on Monday a driver was placed under arrest accused of attacking a CHP officer.
It happened about 1:30 p.m. along northbound I-5 at Main Street in Chula Vista.
Body camera footage shows the moments before and during a suspect’s violent confrontation with a CHP police officer and emergency responders.
“I noticed a vehicle that clearly just got involved in an accident [and] pulled over to assist the driver,” said tow truck driver Larry White who was wearing a body cam.
"Once I walked over to him I noticed that somebody pulled a beer bottle out of the vehicle and threw it off to the side,” said White.
When firefighters and officers arrived, White says the driver became extremely aggressive and then physically violent.
At one point, the man pushed the officer, according to a CHP officer at the scene. He also told News 8 the suspect tried to grab for the officer’s gun and was then tackled to the ground.
The man continued to fight for about 10 minutes, according to White.
That's when White and the firefighters jumped in to help.
Officers say the suspect bit the CHP officer's arm and wouldn't let go.
The man was eventually taken into custody.
Investigators believe he may have been drunk.
