Is someone poisoning pets in North Park?

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — Pet owners want to warn others in the North Park area. Neighbors there say someone is trying to poison their animals.

At least one dog was rushed to the vet after eating what appeared to be a piece of food mixed with rat poison at Morley Field.

Brownie - a rescue pup - is back at home from the vet's office after her foster family says she ate one of these pellets during a walk yesterday morning near Arizona and Dwight streets.

The pellets resemble rat poison and are now being tested for the substance

"I panicked a little bit but knew we needed to get her into the vet,” said Laura Oliver who runs Lionel’s Legacy - the dog rescue program that Brownie is a part of.

"They immediately tried to induce vomiting, [but] Brownie wasn’t having it, unfortunately,” said Oliver. “They put her on a vitamin K supplement [and] we’re just watching her for the next 24 to 48 hours.”

Brownie’s foster mom returned to the site and collected a whole plate full of bright green pellets.

"It’s really hard to think of why someone would want to do something like this other than they’re upset about something,” said Oliver.

She posted about what happened on Facebook to warn other dog owners. Some say the same pellets were spotted in the neighborhood last summer.

Dog owners News 8 spoke to Wednesday said they were just stunned.

10-year-old Lila Glick walked through the area Wednesday to make sure there weren’t any other pellets lying around.

"I don’t want any dogs to get hurt,” she said. “Even if you don’t like dogs, there’s a lot of people who do like dogs.”

Meanwhile Brownie is headed back to the vet for a checkup and Oliver hopes whomever is doing this is caught.

"I want people to be able to walk down their streets and enjoy the day,” said Oliver. “Walk with their pets, walk with their families; that’s ultimately the end goal.”
