San Diego woman who was hit by car in her wheelchair needs help to buy van

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — Community members are coming together to help a San Diego woman who was hit by a car while she was in her wheelchair. The woman, who was with her service dog at the time of the accident, says she is in need of a wheelchair van.

An event this weekend aims to support her.

Taking her dog for a walk has taken on a whole new meaning for Tamandra.

"Now when he sees cars turning in front on us, he gets very worried for me,” she said.

Tamandra is scared to wheel around her Normal Heights neighborhood now after a driver slammed into her this past summer.

"I didn’t even see it coming,” she said. “It was such a shock."

The car barely missed her dog Justice and destroyed her wheelchair.

"I literally went flying and landed twisted on the ground,” Tamandra said.

She says the person who hit her only had bare-minimum insurance and now she is stuck with an injury that makes it almost impossible to get into her car to take care of the basics.

"It tore my rotator cuff in my left shoulder,” said Tamandra. “And I have a pinched nerve in my lower spine that's been causing constant, chronic pain since then.

Not only was she injured, but she says her service dog is more than just a dog, he's her life and she has no one else.

Justice is very energetic as well and a dock-diving champ.

"He’s jumping about 20 feet now,” said Tamandra.

But now they've both been stuck at home.

"I’m super independent, she said. “[Being] just stuck at home has been torture.”

Now Tamandra is pleading for help. She needs to buy a wheelchair van so she and Justice can have their independence back.

If you would like to help Tamandra and Justice out, you can attend a dog wash fundraiser at City Dog in Downtown San Diego this Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tamandra needs about $48,000 to buy an adaptive van. Click here for her GoFundMe page.
