Study: California high on list of most stressed out states in the nation

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) - According to job and career site Zippia, California is ranked number four as the most stressed out state in the United States.

California falls behind New Jersey, Georgia, and Florida according to the findings from Zippia. The list was determined by looking at six areas for each state: commute times, unemployment rates, hours worked, population density, home price to income ratio, and the percentage of the population that is uninsured.

Zippia gathered the information for each area of stress from the U.S. Census’ American Community Survey for 2012 to 2016. When looking at the fifty states as a whole, each area was ranked one to fifty and then all the scores were averaged to find a total stress level. The higher the number a state fell, the more stressed they tended to be.

Surprisingly, it's not the long commute times that landed California on the list. New York, which holds the number five spot on the list, was found to have the longest commute times in the nation. Zippia points out that the big area that caused California to end up in the top ten was the house price to income rate. Even though income may be high, house prices tend to eat up a majority of one’s income.

California has beaches, breweries, and sunshine, but at the cost of high home prices.

The least stressed states on Zippia's list are Iowa, Minnesota, and the Dakotas.
