News 8 Verify: Making sure your vote counts

Election Day is two weeks away, but 88,000 San Diegans have already turned in their ballots for the November election.

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – Election Day is two weeks away, but 88,000 San Diegans have already turned in their ballots for the November election.

The San Diego County’s Registrar of Voters, Michael Vu, said he expects high voter turnout. “I have not seen a midterm like this ever before.”

The majority of registered voters in San Diego County have received mail-in ballots. In fact, 1.2 million ballots have been mailed out. Voters can drop off their ballots any day during business hours at the Registrar of Voters Office, or on Election Day at any polling place.

If voters mail in their ballot, they are asked to pay attention to how many cards make up their ballot. If only one card, then just one postal stamp is needed. If it is two cards, voters will need to add more money to send off their ballots.

“It costs 71 cents to return both cards to us. That is why we place two boxes on the return envelope,” said Vu.

Ballots do not need to arrive on Election Day, but they cannot be post marked after Election Day. Even then, there is a chance ballots may not be counted.

“It has to be postmarked on Election Day and received three days afterward. I would not chance it. I would absolutely get the mail ballot to us as quickly as possible and as soon as possible so it does not extend beyond that third day,” said Vu.

Voters are reminded to sign the back of the envelope before turning in their ballot. Also, voters should try and match their signature to the one on their driver’s license because that is how many ballots will be verified later on.

San Diegans have until midnight on Monday to register to vote. After that, residents will have to visit the Registrar’s Office and vote on the same day.

Those needing to register include anyone who is not currently registered in San Diego County and those who recently moved or changed their name.
