SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — Federal and local agencies came together Tuesday to highlight the upcoming National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Sites across San Diego will participate in the event on Saturday, Oct. 27, according to officials.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and representatives from local law enforcement led the news conference where they also announced a recent prescription pill seizure in San Diego County.

The county plans to collect expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at 44 sites in San Diego on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous.
This is the ninth year of the Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which aims to remove opioids and other medications from homes where they are susceptible to misuse and abuse.
“The rate of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. continues to increase at an alarming rate, as does the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs,” according to officials.
Helping people dispose of prescription drugs is one way the DEA and other agencies say they are trying to combat addiction and overdose in the U.S.
