Sprouts give free food to San Diego students

For college students, they are welcome words: “Free food. Come and get it!”

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) – For college students, they are welcome words: “Free food. Come and get it!”

In Friday’s Zevely Zone, Jeff went to Sprouts Farmers Market in Mira Mesa for one big grocery giveaway.

Joseph Hankinson and Dave Linday attend Miramar College and they took with them free food.

From Sprouts, the food was driven to the Miramar College campus where it was cataloged and weighed.

Kelcey Ellis works with Feeding San Diego. She connected with Sprouts and Miramar College. The goal was to give away the food before it was tossed into a dumpster. Nearly 100 students have signed up to receive alerts of free food.

Students are learning you don’t have to teach generosity when there is food for thought.

Miramar College began their partnership with Sprouts one month ago. Their biggest haul? Nine-hundred pounds of free food.
