Shan'ann Watts' Parents Say They Had No Clue Her Marriage Was Falling Apart

Posted: Updated:

The heartbroken parents of Shan'ann Watts had no clue her marriage was in tatters before her murder at the hands of her husband, Chris Watts.

In an interview with ABC's "20/20," Sandra and Frank Rzucek remembered their daughter as a "phenomenal" mother.

"She was fun, full of life," said Sandra. "She did so many things. She was amazing."

Added Frank, "She just loved her children and she wanted them to have everything."

Watts was sentenced to five life sentences for the murders of Shan'ann, who was 15 weeks pregnant, and their two young daughters, 4-year-old Bella and 3-year-old Celeste, in mid-August.

The Rzuceks said they believed their daughter was "absolutely" happy in her marriage to Watts and never suspected anything was amiss.

"She was extremely happy," said Frank.

Online, Shan'ann gushed about her marriage. "I love Chris! He’s the best dad us girls could ask for," she posted on Facebook in June, together with a screenshot of a text message showing a picture of an ultrasound.

But in reality, things were rocky. Texts exchanged between Shan'ann and a friend just days before her death show how worried the mother was.

"Chris told me last night he's scared to death about this third baby," wrote Shan'ann in one message. "And he's happy with just Bella and Celeste and doesn't want another baby."

The friend consoled her. "He's just scared. Everything will be fun once the baby comes out."

Shan'ann remained unconvinced. "He has changed. I don’t know who he is," she replied.

Just released video shows Watts undergoing a physical examination for scratches or bruises that may have been caused from his final encounter with his wife.

An officer can be seen snapping photos of Watts' torso, which is toned and covered in tattoos. On his back, there's an elaborate tribute to his favorite band, Metallica. In fact, in the immediate aftermath of his family's killings, Watts' search history shows he looked up the lyrics to Metallica's "Battery": "Lunacy has found me / Cannot stop the battery / Pounding out aggression / Turns into obsession / Cannot kill the battery / Cannot kill the family."

Following the examination, Watts is left alone in the interview room and soon falls fast asleep, a picture of one of the children he slaughtered just inches away.
