Senator Kamala Harris says she has smoked marijuana, supports legalization

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — Democratic Senator Kamala Harris of California spoke about her position on marijuana legalization in an interview with a New York-based radio station this week and also admitted to trying pot in college.

The first-term senator who entered the presidential race last month made an appearance on The Breakfast Club on Monday where she was asked about her position on marijuana and other subjects.

In a clip shared via the show’s Twitter account, host Charlamagne tha God says to Harris “they say you oppose legalizing weed,” to which the senator responds, “that’s not true.”

Harris goes on to joke about half her family being from Jamaica. While she was born in Oakland, California, Harris’s parents are immigrants; her father is Jamaican, and her mother is Indian.

Charlamagne later asks Harris if she has smoked marijuana which she admitted to doing in college saying she tried a joint.

“I did inhale,” she told the radio show hosts laughing.

“It was a long time ago, but yes,” she added.

“See I like stuff like that,” says Charlamagne. “That’s a real honest answer.”

The host then asked Harris if marijuana were to be legalized throughout the country if she would do it again.

“Listen, I think that it gives people a lot of joy,” responded Harris. “And we need more joy.”

Senator Harris later tweeted about her stance on legalizing marijuana at the federal level.
