An Oceanside family's new-home nightmare

OCEANSIDE (NEWS 8) – It was love at first sight for an Oceanside family moving into their new $750,000 home until, according to them, the house was in constant need of repairs

“Active gas leaks. [The] furnace didn’t work. [It was] one nightmare after another,” said homeowner Amanda Merz.

Merz, her husband who in the military, and their eight-year-old daughter, Reagan, moved into the new “Mission Lane” development in Oceanside one week before Christmas.

“This was our first new home ever. We were super excited,” Merz said. She said smiles faded when their stove would not work, and they had a gas leak.

“[We had] no way to cook Christmas dinner, and our traditional family meals. No heat, no showers for Christmas,” she said. When it rained steadily in Oceanside, Merz found a foot of water flooding her backyard trampled under their trampoline.

“I paid for an $18,000 lot premium to be their cesspool – that doesn’t seem fair,” Merz said.

Merz sent off a list of repairs to the builder Beazer Homes, but feels her multiple requests for timely help went unanswered. News8 was there when plumbers came by to fix a toilet.

A statement from Beazer Homes:

“Beazer Homes acknowledges that the Merzs have encountered more warranty issues with their home than Beazer Homes expects. Beazer Homes, however, has not denied any warranty claims made by the Merzs. In fact, Beazer Homes has honored its warranty obligations to the Merzs in all cases and has, in fact, provided services above and beyond its warranty obligations on multiple occasions. At present, Beazer Homes continues to investigate open warranty items at the Merzs’ home and will continue to work with the Merzs to have any necessary repairs completed in a timely manner. Ultimately, Beazer Homes regrets the Merzs’ frustration, but Beazer Homes is confident that it has provided the highest level of customer service to the Merzs and remains committed to continuing to do so in the future.” – Statement from David Goldberg, Vice President, Treasurer and Investor Relations of Beazer Homes Corporate Office based in Atlanta.
