Bad Economy Keeping Some In Bad Marriages

Just getting by can be hard enough in these tough economic times. So for some people in unhappy marriages, the financial reality of living apart is just too much to handle. The bad economy is prompting some people to stay in bad marriages.

Bill Eddy is the senior mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center. He's got 16 years under his belt handling couples in disagreement. During that time, he's come across it all.

"I have heard of those cases with the judge partitioning the house, and another where they actually took a thatched roof house and half the house was moved by the wife's relatives, but it's not quite that bad in San Diego yet," he said.

To those in perfect relationships, it might seem odd, but even mediator Shawn Skillin is seeing couples in rocky marriages adapt to the rough economic times.

"People are being creative and cooperative in these circumstances. They realize they just can't split and support the household on the same amount of money they supported one. That's always been an issue in divorce, but it's even more of an issue now," Skillin said.

Just because they chose to live together, Skillin says it doesn't mean they are getting along.

"It hasn't changed minds who've already filed for divorce, but it has slowed down the process," she said.
