What's Going Around: The Common Cold

The cold weather is finally here and so is cold season. Local doctors say upper respiratory infections are really going around right now, but they also remind us there are some things you can do to avoid catching one.\r\n\r\nIt's called the "common cold" and with good reason. There are more than one billion colds in the United States each year. They are easy to get and easy to pass on.\r\n\r\nChildren are most vulnerable because when a new strain is introduced into a school or day care, because it quickly travels through the class.\r\n\r\nBut Doctor James Cevallos at the San Ysidro Health Center says just being aware that the bug is out there is a good start when it comes to avoiding it.\r\n\r\nIf you have a cold, it's important to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids, including good old fashioned chicken soup. It's been used for treating colds since the 12th century and doctors say it may really help because the heat, fluid and salt may help you fight the infection.
