The Trick To Great Halloween Treats On The Cheap

Updated:
Sometimes it pays to procrastinate. If you haven't bought your Halloween treats yet, you're in luck. We set out today to do a story on the high cost of Halloween candy and give you some cheaper alternatives. What we found instead is that candy prices have suddenly become much more affordable at some stores, and those cheaper alternatives are almost too good to pass up.\r\n\r\nPaula Robison was pleasantly surprised to find the good stuff on sale.\r\n\r\n"This is 100 pieces, and it's the good candy, whichÖ that's worth it, instead of the cheap stuff you have to buy because we can't afford anything else," she said.\r\n\r\nIt's a bargain, she says, when you consider chocolate prices are up 4 percent over last year, and her Albertson's receipt shows just how much she saved: regular price per bag - $11.99, and today's sale price, with a preferred shopping card - $6.99.\r\n\r\nThe sales don't stop there. At the Albertson's on Balboa Avenue, Halloween merchandise was 50 percent off and candy was slashed by a third. They're the type of sales we typically see the day after Halloween. But this year, because of the slow economy, some retailers are offering big discounts before the holiday, trying to move their merchandise.\r\n\r\nNow for cheap alternatives to candy: a 12-pack of Halloween tracing stencils for $1, averaging 8 cents each, and a 12-pack of notepads for just 74 cents, just 6 cents a pad. Stickers and tattoos are also a hit with the younger trick-or-treaters, and if you get creative, they're super cheap. Do the same thing with stickers, and you'll end up spending just a couple of pennies per bunch. \r\n\r\n"I know it's good for the kids to have something they can play with rather than put in their mouth that's probably much better," Robison said.\r\n\r\nAt Wendy's you can buy a coupon book for 10 junior sized Frostys for $1, that's only 10 cents a Frosty, and the proceeds benefit the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.\r\n
