State Official Arraigned On Child Porn Charges

A former deputy assistant secretary of the Navy in the Clinton administration, who was working as an aide to Lt. Gov. John Garamendi when he was arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography on his computer, is expected to get five or six years in prison when he is sentenced March 30.

Wade Sanders, a decorated swift-boat captain in Vietnam, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in San Diego Monday to charges of having more than 600 illegal images on his computer, including a video showing "pre-pubescent females" having sexual contact with a man, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Garamendi's office issued a statement, saying "this type of behavior will not be tolerated" and noted that Sanders resigned Nov. 8 after being booked in the case.

Sanders, 67, of San Diego, was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. He was facing up to 10 years in prison and fine up to $250,000 before striking a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Aside from working for Garamendi as a military adviser, Sanders was a military commentator for local and national television.
