Democrats Send Budget Package To Schwarzenegger

Posted: Updated:
The California Legislature's Democratic leaders have sent Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger an $18 billion deficit-cutting package that he has promised to veto.

The legislation was passed in December as a first step to close a deficit estimated at $42 billion over the next 18 months. It has been held up as Democratic leaders and the Republican governor
attempted to negotiate a deal that can win Schwarzenegger's signature.

The Democrats say they've given Schwarzenegger 75 percent of what he's demanded in additional budget cuts and economic stimulus proposals.

But they say the governor seems to be getting cold feet about signing the legislation even with those concessions.

Republican lawmakers and anti-tax groups sued Tuesday to block the Democratic package. They contend it's illegal because it includes tax increases passed without two-thirds votes, as required
by the state Constitution.
