Your Guide To Filing For Unemployment

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if I am eligible?

Eligibility varies for a variety of reasons. We advise unemployed people to apply and let us determine their eligibility.

Apply by going online to When the initial page appears, click on unemployment in the center of the page, then click on eApply4ui link on the next page. You them fill on a form online and submit it. You can also apply by calling 800-300-5616 or if you speak only Spanish, 800-326-8937. Because of the heavy volume of phone calls, applying on line is the most efficient approach.

Can I apply even if I receive severance pay?

We advise people to apply for benefits immediately after separation from their job even if they receive what is described to them as "severance pay." EDD will look over the information and determine eligibility.

Amount of benefits

Your unemployment benefit is based on your work history and your earnings. It can range from $40 a week to $450 a week. A chart on our web site gives the details.  Click on the link we've provided.

Length of benefits

Regular benefits last 26 weeks but because the unemployment rate in California is high compared to other states, benefits can last as long as 59 weeks as a result of extensions passed by Congress last year.
