Plan To Bring New Fighter Jets To Miramar

Posted: Updated:

Military officials unveiled a plan to split 12 overdue and over-budget fighter-jet squadrons between Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and a base in Arizona.

The announcement came at a public meeting Tuesday night at the Mira Mesa Library, which was attended by military representatives and residents.

Five potential alternatives within the plan would designate as few as two or as many as 10 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter squadrons to Miramar, starting in 2012. Whatever was left of the 12 squadrons would then go to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma in Arizona.

The number of aircraft in a squadron varies. At Miramar, the new F-35s would replace six squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets, which equals about 90 aircraft.

Some residents expressed concerns about safety, following the recent jet crash in University City.  The F-35 is a single engine jet and some people felt it might still be too experimental.

Others had more every day concerns, like noise and air pollution.  An environmental impact report still needs to be completed.

The Marine Corps will accept public comment through February 17th.

Authorities called in a mobile DNA lab and anthropologists to help identify the dead as the search went on for victims of the most destructive wildfire in California history. The overall death toll from the outbreak of fires at both ends of the state stood at 25 Sunday and appeared likely to rise.

The dead were found in burned-out cars, in the smoldering ruins of their homes, or next to their vehicles, apparently overcome by smoke and flames before they could jump in behind the wheel and escape. In some cases, there were only charred fragments of bone, so small that coroner's investigators...
