COVINA, Calif. (AP) - An apartment company that asked for rent from the ex-husband of a mother and their son killed in a Christmas Eve massacre in Covina says it did so without knowing what had happened and that it would not pursue outstanding balances on the home.
Alliance Residential Co., which manages the Broadstone Foothill Apartment Homes, sent a letter to Carlos Ortiz, ex-husband of Alice Ortiz and their son Michael. They were among nine family members killed on Christmas Eve by Bruce Pardo, the disgruntled former husband of Alice's sister, Sylvia.
Alliance sent Carlos Ortiz a letter giving three days' notice, and asked for late rent.
Alliance says it was not aware of the tragedy when it sent the letter and would not pursue any outstanding rent.
