Obama Off and Running to Promote Stimulus

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is launching a campaign-style blitz for his $827 billion economic rescue plan.

The president heads to a town hall meeting at a high school in Elkhart, Indiana, today, holds his first White House news conference tonight, and does another town hall in Florida tomorrow.

Obama is aiming to boost a Senate compromise on the economic stimulus plan reached late Friday.

He continues to insist the time for action is now, even though the plan may not be perfect.

Once the Senate passes its plan, merging it with a far different House-approved mix of spending and tax cuts won't be easy.

Meantime, the administration has postponed the unveiling of plans to overhaul the financial rescue program that seeks to thaw still-frozen credit markets. That'll be done tomorrow instead of today.
