Mayor Sanders In D.C. To Lobby For Stimulus Money

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Jerry Sanders departed for Washington, D.C., today to lobby for San Diego's share of President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package.

Sanders will be joined by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, according to Darren Pudgil, the mayor's spokesman.

Sanders will meet tomorrow with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of San Diego's congressional delegation, Pudgil said.

"His focus is to secure funding that will put San Diegans to work," Pudgil said, adding that money could be available for transportation projects, police and for neighborhoods hard hit by foreclosure.

Sanders is scheduled to return to San Diego late tomorrow, Pudgil said.

The Senate voted 61 to 37 today to approve an $800 billion-plus economic stimulus package sought by Obama.
