Police And Owner Follow Stolen Truck On Chase

Posted: Updated:

An auto theft suspect led police on a meandering 20-minute road chase from Mission Valley to San Ysidro in a stolen truck today before finally pulling over and surrendering at gunpoint, along with his passenger.

The owner of the 2006 Ford F-350 happened to see the pickup being driven off in the area of Friars Road and Napa Street while returning to his nearby home from an outing shortly before 11 a.m., according to San Diego police.

The victim reported the theft, and officers caught up with the truck minutes later, SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. They tailed it to the east on Interstate 8, then south on State Route 15, I-805 and, eventually, I-5.

The fleeing motorist at times used center median areas to pass other vehicles while passing through National City, Chula Vista and the southern reaches of San Diego.

Just north of the U.S.-Mexico line, the driver of the pickup exited at Camino de la Plaza as officers gave chase in squad cars and aboard a police helicopter.

At that point, the truck doubled back to the north, then turned onto Dairy Mart Road and continued on to the south, Munoz said.

Approaching Hollister Street and Sunset Avenue, the fleeing driver pulled over when he encountered Border Patrol personnel positioned around an agency vehicle alongside the roadway.

The federal agents and police officers surrounded the truck with their guns drawn, and both suspects complied with their orders to get out and lie face-down on the ground.

Booked into county jail on suspicion of auto theft, evading police and possessing stolen property were Alonso Holguin, 23, and his 30-year-old brother Jose. The younger sibling allegedly had been behind the wheel of the pickup during the pursuit, Munoz said.
