Calif. Lawmaker Fears Even More Cuts Ahead

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Even if the Legislature passes a budget Saturday, California lawmakers could be back for more cuts within months.

Assembly Speaker Karen Bass says she's worried about tax collections falling below current projections. The governor's office released its figures in late December and will update those numbers in May.

Since then, California's economy has continued to spiral down as unemployment marches higher.

Bass, a Democrat from Los Angeles, fears that if sales, personal and corporate taxes continue to drop, the state would have to drastically remake the new spending plan.

Bass is reluctant to make more cuts because Democrats already have agreed to deep reductions in programs they deem essential.
