Rain Threatens Start Of Daytona 500

Posted: Updated:
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Rain is threatening to delay the start of the Daytona 500.

Intermittent showers were expected to move across Daytona International Speedway a few hours before the start of the NASCAR race, which could potentially delay the green flag. It takes about two hours to completely dry the 2 1/2-mile superspeedway after a rainstorm.

NASCAR officials, though, were hopeful the season-opening race would be completed Sunday - even if the entire event had to take place under the lights and in prime time.

Local forecasts called for a 70 percent chance of rain and scattered showers all afternoon and throughout the evening.
