Pair Of Kayakers Rescued From Rough Surf Near La Jolla

Posted: Updated:

Two kayakers unable to get back to shore were rescued this morning, a San Diego lifeguard said.

One of the kayakers called 911 from his cell phone about 8:30 a.m., lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum said. A lifeguard on a water scooter found them about 2 miles off La Jolla, he said.

"They were getting blown to the north pretty rapidly," Lerum said.

At the time of their rescue, the winds were estimated at more than 20 mph, which made it too dangerous for lifeguard on the water scooter to tow them.

A lifeguard rescue boat was dispatched from Mission Bay, and the two kayakers were towed back to shore. The two had been paddling since about 6:30 a.m.
