Calif. GOP Oust Leader Amid Strained Budget Talks

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California lawmakers were on the verge

of a budget fix -- but it now appears to be in danger of collapse.

Republicans in the state Senate have ousted their leader,

Senator Dave Cogdill, who had agreed to tax increases in the budget

proposal. Cogdill has been replaced by Senator Dennis

Hollingsworth, who's an anti-tax hardliner.

The change could force a new round of budget negotiations.

The current package containing billions in tax hikes, spending

cuts and borrowing took leaders more than three months to put

together as the state tries to pass a midyear budget fix and avoid

fiscal calamity.

While the wrangling goes on, thousands of state worker layoff

notices are going out and hundreds of public works projects are on

the brink of losing state funding.
