Music Teacher Pleads Not Guilty To Failing To Register As Sex Offender

The director of a local youth music group pleaded not guilty today to failing to re-register as a sex offender when he moved from Poway to another San Diego jurisdiction last summer.

Vincent Harry Greco, 63, pleaded guilty in 1969 to committing a lewd act on a child under 14 in Napa County and was required to register as sex offender wherever he lived for the rest of his life, prosecutor Kristian Trocha said outside court.

The defendant faces up to seven years and four months in state prison if convicted of felony charges of failing to register as a sex offender and to provide a change of address when he relocated, the prosecutor said.

"If you move, you have to register," Trocha said.

Judge Robert Trentacosta set bail at $100,000 and scheduled a readiness conference for March 6 and a preliminary hearing for March 10.

Defense attorney Allen Cazares said Greco has lived in San Diego County for 25 years and has one adult child.

Last Wednesday, SDPD sex-crimes investigators received a report about possible "inappropriate conduct" between Greco and a student at San Diego School of Creative Performing Arts, where he has volunteered as a music instructor.

Police subsequently determined that Greco is a registered sex offender and had failed to notify administrators at the arts school about that fact, said Lt. Rick O'Hanlon of the San Diego Police Department.

He also failed to notify police about his contact with minors and did not disclose his home address, both of which are required by his status as a sex offender, according to the SDPD.

Detectives arrested Greco on Sunday afternoon, shortly before he was to lead a rehearsal of the Jazz Ensemble, whose members range in age from 13 to 19, O'Hanlon said.

The band used a room at Mesa College in Linda Vista to practice but is not affiliated with the school, according to police.

Greco is a pianist and conductor who co-founded the Jazz Ensemble in 2006, according to the group's Web site.
