Double-Murder Suspect Faces Arraignment

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CNS) - A mentally ill drifter who allegedly hacked his elderly parents to death in their North County home six weeks ago is scheduled to be arraigned today in a Vista courtroom.

Mexican police apprehended Dennis Brian Gluck, 44, on a bus near Ensenada Thursday afternoon and turned him over to U.S. authorities.

Gluck was booked into jail on two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Harry and Jean Gluck of Carlsbad.

Officers found the bodies of the 90-year-old man and his 78-year-old wife in a bedroom at their Chestnut Avenue house the evening of Jan. 18 while checking on their welfare at the request of a relative.

Postmortem exams determined that the couple had died of "chop" wounds to their upper bodies inflicted by a bladed implement of some kind.

The suspect "has assaulted people before with edged weapons" and was arrested several years ago for attacking someone with a machete at a homeless camp in Oceanside, said Lt. Kelly Cain.

Investigators have not identified the murder weapon, the lieutenant said.

The suspect, who lived with his parents for several months prior to the slayings, had a history of "aggressive" behavior toward them, though no such episodes were known to have occurred during his recent stay with the couple, according to Cain.

Police believe the suspect fled to Mexico immediately after the killings. Baja authorities aided in the search for him by distributing fliers bearing his photo.

In response to a query from a Mexican federal police officer, a bus company employee reported seeing a man matching Gluck's description boarding a transit vehicle on Thursday. The suspect was arrested without incident a short time later.
