FAA Expected to Release Jet Crash Audio Recordings

Posted: Updated:

The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to release audio recordings Tuesday, created shortly before an F/A 18D Hornet crashed into a University City neighborhood, killing four people on December 8th.

The Marine Corps has twice delayed the release of the 16 minute audio recording between the pilot and air traffic controllers.  Residents want to know if any mistakes were made when the pilot chose to land at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, instead of Naval Air Station North Island.

The recording was originally slated to be released on January 28th, after News 8 and other media organizations filed a Feedom of Information Act Request with the FAA.  At the time, the FAA told News 8 the Marine Corps delay request was granted, because the Marine Corps was concerned the tape would jeopardize its crash investigation.

It's unclear what time Tuesday the recording may be released, but the offices of local Congressional representatives say they expect to be briefed around 10:30am EST in Washington, D.C.
