Grocery Shopping On the Cheap

Posted: Updated:

Henry's Farmers Market and Gonzalez Northgate Market are the best value grocery stores in San Diego, according to a recent report by OurCity: San Diego, a new website and magazine.

OurCity chose Henry's and Gonzalez based on an extensive study on price, quality, service and store appearance. The magazine's editorial staff visited more than 20 grocery stores and priced 40 items in produce, meat and poultry, and basics.

Henry's was recognized for its produce and meat departments, and a solid selection of organic items at good prices. Gonzalez offers even better prices in a very large store, 55,000-square feet, with a wide selection of Hispanic foods. A family of four can expect to spend $205 a week at Henry's and $177 at Gonzalez.

Food 4 Less offers the lowest prices in San Diego, with a weekly bill for a family of four averaging just $167. Bristol Farms has the highest prices, with a comparable bag of groceries costing $340.

"We were surprised with the contrast from the least expensive to the most expensive grocery store" said Jack Crittenden, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of OurCity: San Diego. "This report should prove a valuable guide for consumers across the country."

"San Diego has a wonderful assortment of the finest ingredients for experienced chefs as well as everyday cooks," said Marcie Rothman, OurCity's Food Editor. "We want our readers to know where to find the best, and to encourage them to eat healthy and wisely."
