Legislation Would Honor Slain SF Supervisor Harvey Milk

Posted: Updated:

There's a new push behind legislation that would honor murdered gay activist Harvey Milk.

State Senator Mark Leno, who is also gay, is backing the move to designate the former San Francisco Supervisor's birthday May 22 a "day of significance" in California.

Sean Penn, whose portrayal of Milk won him an Oscar, is voicing his support for the legislation.

"Harvey Milk, in my own experience of researching the project and learning about him in the way in which a day like this will encourage children in schools around the state to do, wakes up that interest in activism and volunteerism in every way imaginable," said Penn.

Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed the same bill last year, saying Milk should be honored on a local level instead of a statewide level.
