SD Unified School Board Approves $100 Million In Cuts

Posted: Updated:

Board members of the San Diego Unified School District have approved more than a hundred million dollars in cuts to balance next year's budget.

The cuts range from healthcare benefit reductions to increased class sizes. However, the good news is that teacher layoffs are not part of the plan.

District officials say it all boils down to decreased state funding.

"The cuts in our school district have been Draconian. We cut $53 million out at the beginning of the school year to balance our budget. As the state's finances got even worse, we just recently reduced another 46 million in mid-year cuts," explained Terry Grier SDUSD's Superintendent.

More than $34 million trimmed from the budget are reductions that must be negotiated with employee unions.
