Fire in Talmadge area prompted power outages and evacuations

San Diego Gas & Electric shut off electrical service to nearly 4,000 addresses in the area due to the fire. Affected customers had power restored just after 5:30 PM

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported that a brush fire that broke out in the Talmadge area Tuesday was fully contained as of around 2 p.m. on Thursday. The fire broke out around 1:20 p.m. in the area of Fairmount Avenue and Aldine Drive in Talmadge near Kensington. San Diego Police Department and San Diego Fire-Rescue Department lifted all evacuation orders and warnings around 3:20 p.m.

SDFD crews battled the fire from the ground with air drops coming from above. San Diego Gas and Electric's aircrane was also dispatched to the fire completing air drops.

No injuries and no damage to homes was reported as of Tuesday night.

Several streets in the Kensington and Talmadge areas were given mandatory evacuation orders during the fire while others were given evacuation warnings.

A temporary evacuation area was established at Hoover High School but was suspended when evacuations were lifted.

To help crews working on the fire, San Diego police closed Fairmount Avenue in both directions between Interstate 8 and El Cajon Blvd. SDFD tweeted an update just before 8 p.m. reporting Fairmount had re-opened.

San Diego fire personnel say the blaze charred four acres.

Due to reports of flames underneath power lines, San Diego Gas & Electric shut off electrical service to nearly 4,000 addresses in Kensington, Talmadge and the west side of the College area. The affected customers had power restored just after 5:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
