San Diego grocery store workers rally over contract negotiations

The grocery workers union will hold rallies outside two different Ralphs stores every day until the end of the month.

SAN DIEGO — San Diego grocery store workers held another rally on Wednesday due to ongoing negotiations with Kroger affecting thousands of workers at Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons in Southern California.

Employees began the first day of demonstrations to fight for better pay.
The rallies took place at a Ralph’s in downtown San Diego and another one in San Marcos. Wednesdays demonstrations were the start of ten days of demonstrations. The grocery workers union plans to hold rallies outside two different Ralphs stores every day until the end of the month.

They’ve been trying to come up with a fair contract for five months and so far, The employees say they are not satisfied.

On Friday, hundreds of grocery workers rallied outside Ralph’s in Mission Valley.

More than 12,000 grocery workers in San Diego and Imperial Counties have not had a contract since March and they’re asking for better pay. Nearly all of the workers at local Vons, Ralphs, and Albertsons voted in favor of a strike, if necessary, that would be the first in 16 years. 

Ralphs responded with a statement saying "the stores business will go on as usual as they negotiate with the union."

On Thursday, rallies are scheduled in Chula Vista and Oceanside.
