IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (AP) - San Diego County border patrol agents have nabbed two people who entered the U.S. illegally by using dive scooters.
Authorities say a Border Patrol airplane spotted a 38-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy walking Wednesday night on Imperial Beach, a few miles south of San Diego. They were wearing wetsuits and carrying dive scooters - self-propelled devices that pull divers underwater.
Border Patrol spokesman Michael Jimenez says the pair had no scuba gear and probably used the scooters to tow themselves about three-quarters of a mile through the water.
They were trying to conceal themselves in the sand when they were arrested. Jiminez says the men probably paid thousands to a smuggling cartel that supplied the gear.
He says both Mexican nationals have been returned to their country.
