SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - 2014 is on track to be a record year for tourism here in San Diego.

According to the San Diego Tourism Authority, an estimated 34 million people will have visited America's Finest City by the end of the year. That translates into more than 16 million hotel room stays, and a direct economic impact of an estimated $9 billion.

Tourism Authority president and CEO Joe Terzi attributes the big year in part to a strong advertising campaign.

"We spent $15 million in 6 months and we can see the actual result of spending that much money, and talking to people about San Diego really yields fantastic results," he said.

Terzi also says a stronger economy and a bounce-back year for the travel industry helped set up the record numbers.
